Carl Ritter

Carl Ritter was a German geographer, and is considered one of the founders of the modern geography along with Alexander von Humboldt, because he explained the relationship between the physical environment and the human activities. He was born on August 7, 1779 in Quedlinburg, Germany and he died on September 28, 1859 in Berlin.

His masterpiece is the 19-volume Die Erdkunde im Verhältniss zur Natur und zur Geschichte des Menschen (The Science of the Earth in Relation to Nature and the History of Mankind), written betwenn 1817 and 1859. He developed with a prodigious extension the topic of the influence of physical environment in human activities, but he couldn't finish his work. because he died and only finishied the topics related to the continent Asia and Africa.

The impact of Ritter on geography has been remarkable, because he strengthened a new conception of it.

Personally, I like very much his work and his strength to go ahead and innovate in geography, always to look for something else and link the human aspect or social to the physical or environmental. That's become in something very important in geography, because the areas are different, but related to each other.

I don't like Karl Ritter. But i can recognize that he is one of the most important geographers. In fact, he was teacher of Elisee Reclus.
